Many of our Flying Scot members have had the pleasure of participating in Midwinters or other regattas at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron over the years. We have fond memories of members bringing out homemade hot appetizers for the welcome parties. As many are aware, SSS suffered significant damage from both Hurricanes Helene and Hurricane Milton. While the membership, including the local Flying Scot Fleet 36, is actively involved in the clean-up and recovery, including three who serve on the Board of Directors, docks are not insurable assets. ...

When the devastation of two hurricanes at Davis Island damaged their club and surrouding areas, they regrettably had to cancel Midwinters for 2025. The FSSA sent out an appeal for a new location. Thank you to those who worked to find a new location for us! So many of our fleets from around the country offered to take up the challenge of hosting a national event in just a few months! We are lucky to be a part of this great Class of sailors! We hope to see you on the water for Midwinters 2025 at Ft. Walton...
Continue Reading...The members of FSSA are devastated by how the destruction from the hurricanes has impacted our friends, Davis Island Yacht Club and all of Florida. We know that you will successfully reconstruct your homes and club and will be ready to be the “sailingest little club in the south” again!
The FSSA is working to find another venue to hold Midwinters in 2025. Please contact Nina Cummings if your club is interested in hosting this event.
With great regret and no small amount of heartbreak, we must back away from hosting the 2025 Flying Scot Midwinters at Davis Island YC in Tampa in April. As you know, a pair of hurricanes first flooded the Tampa Bay area and then attempted to blow us all away in October.
The damage is mind-boggling—not just at the yacht club facilities, but at the homes and in the families that make DIYC the "sailingest club in the South."
Ours is a volunteer club; we have the skills and the will to rebuild, and I have every confidence that the club will be able to host excellent regattas...
