Southern Yacht Club
- SYC is a full service yacht club located directly on Lake Pontchartrain. The restaurant is open daily except on Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The bar is open daily except on Mondays (Tuesday – Thursday, and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and from 11:00 a.m. to Midnight on Friday and Saturday).
- Purchases at SYC – Southern Yacht Club does not accept cash for purchases of food and beverages. You must obtain a guest card from the Receptionist located on the 2nd floor. For those who are members of Clubs with reciprocal privileges, you may make charges back to your Club. Please be prepared to show your membership card to the Receptionist to obtain a guest card. For all others your guest card charges will be billed to your Visa or MasterCard.
- Lake Pontchartrain -- The “Lake” is a brackish body of water approximately 24 miles wide, 50 miles long, and with an average depth of 15-20 feet. The racing area is normally 1/2 to 1.5 miles from the clubhouse, depending on the anticipated wind direction. Winds during March are typically light to moderate, but can get much higher should a late season front come through.
- Boat storage and Launching -- SYC has ample dry storage facilities plus dock space for those who might choose to wet sail. There are three (3) high-speed cable hoists, but no launching ramp.

SYC -- The Second Oldest Yacht Club: The records of the Southern Yacht Club trace its history back to the club's founding in the GulfCoast resort town of Pass Christian, Mississippi in the year 1849. Only the venerable New York Yacht Club can document an earlier founding date. As such, SYC is proud to bear the mantle of second oldest yacht club in the United States.
Hurricane Katrina made landfall just east of New Orleans on August 29, 2005 causing widespread destruction throughout the region. Heavily damaged by wind and flood waters, the clubhouse was ultimately destroyed by a massive fire which burned, unchecked, in the hours following the storm. Sadly, many historic trophies and other priceless artifacts were lost in the fire.
Under the leadership of Commodores Ewell "Corky" Potts and Hjalmar Breit and General Manager Tim Fitzpatrick, the club's organization was kept remarkably intact through the ordeal of Katrina's aftermath. By the end of 2005, an interim facility had been erected to meet the needs of the overwhelmingly supportive membership. SYC's brand new fourth clubhouse was dedicated in the fall of 2009.
A Sailing Tradition: Over the years, SYC sailors have won four Olympic medals and numerous national and international championships. Through more than one hundred and fifty years of prosperity, depressions, wars, yellow fever epidemics, floods and hurricanes, the Southern Yacht Club has always maintained a tradition of keen competition, sportsmanship, and enormous hospitality.
New Orleans -- history & heritage, restaurants & cuisine, music, museums, theaters, plantations, zoos, aquarium, insectarium, antiques, cool art, vintage clothing, one of a kind jewelry, nightlife, casinos, streetcars, swamp tours, architecture, French Quarter, warehouse district, the Marigny, etc. -- from the elegant hotels and restaurants to the fantastic music clubs, shopping and more…all are found here. And, if you want to experience a New Orleans style parade there will be some on the 10th and 11th celebrating our Irish and Italian heritage.
New Orleans is world-famous for its food. The indigenous cuisine is distinctive and influential. From centuries of amalgamation of the local Creole, haute Creole, and New Orleans French cuisines, New Orleans food has developed. Local ingredients, French, Spanish, Italian, African, Native American, Cajun, Chinese, and a hint of Cuban traditions combine to produce a truly unique and easily recognizable Louisiana flavor. New Orleans is known for specialties like beignets (locally pronounced like "ben-yays"), square-shaped fried pastries that could be called "French doughnuts" (served with café au lait made with a blend of coffee and chicory rather than only coffee); and Po' boy and Italian Muffuletta sandwiches; Gulf oysters on the half-shell, fried oysters, boiled crawfish, and other seafood; étouffée, jambalaya, gumbo, and other Creole dishes; and the Monday favorite of red beans and rice. (Louis Armstrong often signed his letters, "Red beans and ricely yours".) Another New Orleans specialty is the praline, a candy made with brown sugar, granulated sugar, cream, butter, and pecans. There are too numerous good restaurants offering local flavor to list. Several are not far from Southern Yacht Club, and include SYC's own restaurant. So weather it Cajun or Creole, shrimp, oysters, crabs or gumbo -- you name it, you can find it in New Orleans!

The clubhouse does not have housing facilities, or the capacity for RV hookups. There is unfortunately no camping permitted on SYC grounds or available nearby. New Orleans, affectionately called "The Big Easy", is a premier tourism destination with broad appeal, regardless of budget. The list below is generally limited to lodging nearest the club and, by and large, on the path from the airport. However, New Orleans is a compact city and The French Quarter and other attractions are only minutes away by car. Most of the accommodations listed below are 4-6 miles (10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions and roadwork) from SYC and are located in the vicinity of Interstate 10 and Veterans Memorial Boulevard where these roadways cross Causeway Boulevard. This is not an all-inclusive list. There are also “back ways” from most of these to SYC that “locals” can explain. None of the numerous “downtown”, “French Quarter” or “Warehouse District” accommodations are listed. These are generally more expensive than those listed below, and are 20-25 minutes from SYC. There are also less expensive accommodations on Veterans past Causeway Boulevard, just a bit further away.
The below are within a 10 to 20 minute drive of SYC – there are others further out along the Veterans Boulevard corridor:
