The Ice Bucket regatta this past Saturday (1/8/2022) lived up to its reputation of being Cold and Blustery. Mother Nature served up bright sunshine, temps in the mid 20s, 8 kts of breeze, and backdrop of fresh snow for the 2022 Ice Bucket Regatta
After clearing the boats of snow & ice, nine competitors launched 4 boats and competed in 5 closely contested races. In this, the final event of the the Flying Scots' debut, contested starts, precision sail trim, on-time spinnaker sets and close finishes served as evidence of how much progress our sailors have made this season.
The Ice Bucket Regatta traditionally serves as the culmination of the Frostbiting season. Kudos to Paul Suzdak and Frank Scalisi for their efforts in organizing it all. This year, new members Karthik Selvarajan & Lloyd Tuckman joined in the fun taking advantage of the welcoming nature of the regular group of cold weather sailing enthusiasts.
Winners, Andy Zangle of MBC and RYC’s own Alan Uminski had the honor of hoisting the Auld Winter Mug. While not quite the Lombardi Trophy or Lord Stanley’s Cup, it is always a thrill to witness the champions hold the ancient prize aloft. Perhaps for 2022 we will invest in something a tad bit more yachty.
Special thanks to Mark Rebovich for graciously providing the venerable Sea Horse as race committee boat. Comfort and the safety of the competitors and Race Committee was greatly enhanced on the very cold waters (45 ·) of Raritan Bay.
A great time was had by all!
