2025 Flying Pig Regatta, Cowan Lake, Wilmington, OH
The 2025 Flying Pig regatta at Cowan Lake Sailing Association was held May 31 – June 1, 2025.
We had a total of 11 boats in two fleets. Conditions were great Saturday. A little chilly with good wind to be able to run 3 good races.
With only 3 boats in our Challenger fleet, they agreed to fold into one start while still being scored as a separate fleet. This allowed them to gain experience in a larger starting field and oval fleet size while still being scored as a unique fleet. The final results show both scoring as independent fleets and the combined results as if we were all one fleet.
For the Hog fleet, Brian and Pam Pace from Hoover YC in Columbus OH, mixed it up with Bruce and Lynn Kitchen for 1-2 finishes in the three races on Saturday. Pace took a one-point lead into the clubhouse on Saturday. The third-place spot was totally up for grabs with three boats: Conrad/Adams/O’toole, all tied following the end of the third race.
For the Oinkers, The Bourgois and Van Voorhis teams from Cowan did the same with Bourgois enjoying the one-point lead at dinner.
Fleet One provided a home cooked menu of Bar-B-Que fare prepared by our own in-house smoker chef Kurt Thaxton. Evening activity was coordinated by a Bob Ross wig and beard wearing, Bethany Bourgois. She is a talented graphic designer and artist who shared her teaching talents in a “SIP-N-PAINT” exercise. More sipping than painting might have been going on, but the final results of our local sailing artist talents were very good.
Sunday brought light winds and only one race. Kitchen’s managed to stay in front of the Pace’s for a tie breaking overall first place finish in the Hog Fleet. Wray Van Voorhis claimed the big pig in the Oinkers and a similar tie-breaking finish. He is now promoted to the Hog Fleet for future regattas. Welcome to the club.
