It would seem the grail of Fleet 80's Sail for the Grail Regatta hosted by Moraine Sailing Club on Saturday Sept. 21st would overflow from the persistent rain that fell that day, but not the case. Continue Reading...You might not think that the government shutdown could affect our sailing events, but it actually can, and it did. The Grand Annual Regatta was scheduled to be held at Cave Run Lake, a Corps of Engineers lake in Daniel Boone National Park in Kentucky, the weekend of 10/6-10/7/2013. However, due to The US government's partial shutdown the lake was closed! Racing was cancelled, but not the party! They still held a Not-a-Regatta Pig Roast in Lexington. That's the spirit!
Roger Punzi, in whose honor this regatta is held, would be thrilled to see the number of boats that came to this regatta! He was an avid Flying Scot sailor who supported the fleet for many years.
Day 2 on Sunday 10/6 brought pouring rain and 10-12 knot winds, 4 guest boats we're still at the regatta, but two of those decided not to brave the elements. In the end we ran two races with 8 boats on the line with Roger and Kate Sharp from Massapoag walking away...

Well, we didn't get any wind on Saturday, 10/5 at Candlewood, but we had pirates! I guess they thought they could scare everyone out on the race course in case pure skill was not enough! Argh I say!
While we did not race, we had a really great time visitng with old and new friends. There were 20 boats from 3 states registered and ready to go if the predicted wind actually materialized. Brian Hayes from North Sails was good enough to hold a sail trim...

Our club, Massapoag Yacht Club in Sharon, MA, organizes two of these events a year, and although it is always a blast being out there with others, it does not need to be an organized or group event.
