President’s Message, June 2012
As I finish up my first year as your President, I am pleased with our class and how we are doing, but I am a bit concerned about keeping our fleets going as well as growing. Some fleets are continuing to thrive and grow while others are dropping off. Our membership is down a bit this year, and I am hoping we can bring the level back up to previous years’ levels. 2012 Foundation Awards
FY12 Flying Scot Foundation Awards The Foundation board has carefully considered a number of applications for funding this coming year and has made the following awards which total $4,650: Fleet 6 (Deep Creek Lake, MD; Bob Vance, Fleet Captain) requested Speakers Bureau funds to help pay travel expenses so that Kelly Gough can put on a day-long sail training session just prior to the Sandy Douglass Memorial Regatta, July 27-29 at Deep Creek Lake (Award: $250). Lake Norman Hosts 44 Boats for Great 48
Lake Norman Flying Scot Fleet #48 ordered up perfect wind for their annual Great 48 regatta May 5 and 6 and 44 boats participated. This club often has large numbers at their regattas, but this was a great showing even by their standards. In addition to good wind and lots of boats, the regatta committee arranged for FS boats # 1/First One (owned and sailed by Harry Carpenter) and #2/Dream Weaver #2 (sailed by Tommy Weaver), and two of the newest boats, #6020/Moxie (Bill Ross) and #6022/ Rick’s Café Américain (Midwest District’s own Ryan Malmgren). 2012 Flying Scot National Championships
We at Carlyle Sailing Association (CSA) hope you will join us for the 2012 Flying Scot North American Championships (NACs) June 23 through 29 at beautiful Lake Carlyle, near Carlyle, Illinois. CSA has hosted the NACs four times, most recently in 2004. In addition, the club regularly hosts regional and national events; for example, the Championship of Champions was held here in 2010. From the President Diane Kampf, FS 5857 Dear fellow sailors, By the time you read this, we should be back from another great Midwinter regatta in New Orleans and thinking about sailing at our own club this year. At Massapoag Yacht Club in Sharon, MA, home of Fleet 76, we have several regattas and social events, sailing lessons co-sponsored by the Town and our Club, Race Training, a Junior Sailing program, some fun races, moonlight sails and various club social events. Fl District Standings
We are 5 races into a 6 race season and we have a winner; Paul Abdullah! Congratulations to Paul and his crew who won the Lake Eustis regatta, after also winning in Jacksonville and Tampa. You may know that Paul is a champion in the Thistle class and he seems to be having no trouble adapting to another Sandy Douglas design. Very impressive sailing! Some are lucky enough to have a place down south where they continue sailing all year round. But those of us who are Northerners and miss sailing during the fall/winter downtime can consider sailing in the Flying Scot Midwinter Championship.
