Saddle up, sailors! Fleet 23 invites you to the 52nd Open House Regatta at White Rock Lake in
Dallas, Texas—where the wind howls, the history runs deep, and the spirit of the lake is as
untamed as ever.

Think you know White Rock Lake? Think again.
Before Corinthian Sailing Club (CSC) dropped anchor in 1939, four other sailing clubs tried to
stake their claim. Droughts, fires, silting, and disbanding—Mother Nature and time had their way.
But CSC endured, becoming the longest-standing sailing club on the lake.
Wild Winds & Wily Weather
The highest recorded wind speed at White Rock Lake? A staggering 81 mph! That’s not just breezy,
it’s downright feral. Thankfully, our sailors know when to reef and retreat, stowing boats and
sheltering in the clubhouse when the skies turn wild. .

A Lake Born of Ambition
In 1910, the City of Dallas bought farmland around White Rock Creek, completing the dam and
spillway by 1911. But this wasn’t the first dam on the creek—White Rock’s story stretches even
further back.

Ghosts, POWs & Pea Patch
• Over 400 German POWs were held at Winfrey Point in 1943.
• A jail once sat at the bottom of the dam, called the Pea Patch
• The fish hatchery at the dam’s base was relocated from Fair Park.
• The Civilian Conservation Corps housed and employed hundreds of men here, planting
over 1,500 trees around the lake.
Boats, Barges & Bonnie Times
Today, White Rock Lake hosts a vibrant mix of sailboats, dragon boats, sculls, and more. Back in
the 1930s, there were around 2,500 sailors, dozens of Chris Craft motorboats, Speedboats, water
taxis and the legendary Bonnie Barge. The first regatta in 1926 saw four boats launch—but only
one crossed the finish line!
Marathon Madness
The White Rock Marathon, which loops around the lake, ranks among the top 10 U.S. marathons
and serves as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Its primary benefactor? Texas Scottish Rite
Hospital for Children.
Wildlife Wonders
Sure, you’ll spot ducks and geese—but keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, pelicans, and even
wild monk parakeets. Beavers, minks, bobcats, and wild boars roam the area. And yes, an alligator
was once shot here. That’s Texas for ya.
The Lady of the Lake
Local legend tells of a ghostly young woman drifting along the shoreline, asking for a ride home. If
you’ve felt her presence, you know—some stories aren’t just tales.
Fun Facts & Figures
• 1,245 acres of water
• 18,169 acre-feet of capacity

So, grab your boots and Stetson, hoist your sails, and join us for a regatta that’s part race, part
rodeo, and all heart. Fleet 23’s Open House Regatta is where history has carved salty sailors, and
the lake tells its wild tale.
