Sad News in the Flying Scot Family
It is with a heavy heart that we tell the Flying Scot community that Tom Hohler passed away on January 9, 2018,at age 73. Tom was a stalwart of the Flying Scot class, having served as Ohio District Governor for several years, before joining his wife Chris Czapleski in France on her very exciting teaching journey. Chris describes him as Thomas Paul Hohler, Ph.D. – teacher, scholar of philosophy, passionate competitive sailor, and, especially, husband and father. I’d like to add loyal friend to that list. 2017 Jeff Penfield Memorial Regatta – Sarasota Sailing Squadron, FL
Jeff Penfield Memorial Regatta Nov. 11-12, 2017 by Dave Thinel The Sarasota Sailing Squadron and the Flying Scot Fleet 36 hosted the seventh annual Jeff Penfield Regatta, Nov.11 and 12, 2017. The regatta is also one of the stops on the Flying Scot Florida District traveling series. We had 24 teams of Scot racers ready to tackle Sarasota Bay Saturday morning. A passing cold front to our north brought a brisk easterly breeze, temperatures in the seventies and sunny! 2017 Hospice Regatta, Western Carolina Sailing Club, Anderson, SC
Western Carolina Sailing Club, in Anderson South Carolina, held our 17th Annual Hospice Regatta this past weekend. The event raises funds for a local non-profit Hospice Organization called Hospice of the Upstate. The Regatta is part of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance where events are held all over the country to benefit a local Hospice charity. This year we had record numbers of Flying Scot’s (18) and boats in total (96). We also exceeded our goal ($75,000) and raised $80,600. 2017 Ocean Challenge – South Carolina Yacht Club, Hilton Head, SC
The 2017 Carolina Ocean Challenge Regatta was hosted by the South Carolina Yacht Club on Hilton Head Island, SC, on October 7-8, 2017. Nineteen boats participated in 5 classes with 11 Harbor 20s, 2 Handicap with Spinnakers, 3 handicap no spinanakers, and 3 Flying Scots participating. 2017 Great Scot Regatta – Birmingham Sailing Club vs Hurricane Nate
Great Scot competitors at the local Honky Tonk paying tribute to the late Tom Petty The Great Scot Regatta was this past weekend at Birmingham Sailing Club in Alabama. While Hurricane Nate was on the way, the club managed to get in 3 races for the 24 teams on Satruday and based on the Facebook posts, it was a great time.
