I just bought a used Flying Scot. The bottom block of the mainsheet is attached to the bail on the rudder head by a about a 5 inch loop of white cord, which is showing some fraying.
What is the advantage of this setup as opposed to attaching the block directly to the bail on the rudder head?

You can also use a Frisbee with a hole in it where the main is connected to the tiller to block the main sheet from catching on the head.
I have a factory wire rope extender that is perhaps somewhat longer than 5 inches. The top part of the extender is attached to an elstic chord that goes to a simple plastic tubular cleat on the tiller.With the elastic tight the effective point of attachment is to the tiller, appx 8 inches forward of the rudder head. On downwind legs in light air this keeps the main sheet on the rear deck instead of dragging through the water. It is not perfect but it helps. Karafiath FS 3512
