Fall 48 Report from Lake Norman

By Tim Porter

The 2025 Fall 48 Regatta once again proved that even when the wind refuses to show up on time, sailors will still find a way to have a good time. The weekend had all the hallmarks of a classic fall event at Lake Norman Yacht Club: great food, plenty of laughter, and just enough breeze to make everyone question their life choices before rewarding them with a few hours of honest sailing.

Saturday’s forecast called for no breeze, and for once the weatherman was exactly right. The lake looked more like a mirror than a racecourse. The race committee gave it their best shot, heading out with optimism and flags at the ready, but the little wind that appeared couldn’t make up its mind. It came from every possible direction at once, keeping the fleet guessing and the committee spinning in circles. Some boats drifted valiantly for a few minutes before surrendering to gravity and sandwiches. The rest of us decided that if we couldn’t race, we could at least eat well and tell increasingly exaggerated stories about races past.

Sunday brought a welcome change. The morning started with a light but promising breeze, and the fleet wasted no time heading out to make the most of it. The race committee managed to get three solid races in before things started to get tricky again. Each race was close, with positions constantly shifting as the breeze teased and taunted the fleet.

In a final burst of optimism, the committee started a fourth race, hoping to squeeze one more in before the time limit. The fleet got off the line cleanly, but before anyone could reach the first mark, the wind sighed one last time and completely disappeared. With boats barely ghosting along and crews resorting to interpretive dance in an effort to summon breeze, the committee made the only sensible call and abandoned the race.

When the scores were tallied, Dave Rink and Joel Blade emerged victorious, sailing consistently and staying out of trouble. Just one point behind were John and Sharon Wake, proving that steady performance pays off. Rounding out the top three were Richard Shellow and reigning North American Champion David Ames.

The rest of the fleet wasn’t far behind. From fourth through eleventh, the points were tightly packed, and any one of those boats could have won one of the coveted ladder trophies with a little more breeze and a little luck.

Back on shore, the food and company made up for whatever the wind lacked. Stories were traded, plates were refilled, and laughter carried farther than the wind ever did. It was a reminder that while we come to race, we stay for the people, the food, and the shared moments that make the Fall 48 such a highlight of the season.

Even with light air and a few false starts, the weekend was a success. After all, a regatta with good friends, good food, and just enough sailing to earn dessert is still a pretty great way to spend a fall weekend.
