The Western Carolina Sailing Club Hospice Regatta was held October 10-12 on Lake Hartwell with 21 Flying Scots registered and 80 boats attending.
Saturday was breezy with winds 15-25 as we ended up sailing one race before the RC raised the AP over H sending all boats to the harbor. We had several capsizes that took some time to rescue. It also provided a learning moment for me as the rescue and RC boats were not prepared or educated on what needed to be done to handle a swamped Flying Scot. We were fortunate that member Dan Neff immediately jumped on a boat and helped with the recovery.
Sunday was 5-10 from the north and allowed the RC to get in 4 races before shutting down for the weekend.
Boat #2 sailed by Dave Rink and Joel Blade won the event and was a testament on how competitive older boats can be. Tommy Weaver (owner of #2) and Dave traded boats for the weekend. I don’t think it matters what boat Dave sails…he and Joel will be fast. Sean O’Donnell and Lauren Christian were 2nd , BJ and Emily Jones were 3rd.
Lots of great food, a raffle of all raffles and successful fundraising with competitive sailing by all. We raised a record $141k for Hospice of the Upstate, a local non profile Hospice House that supports the Upstate of South Carolina. Thank you to many FS class members who supported my fundraising.
This is the third event of the Fall Southern Circuit. Next up is the Great Scot October 25-26 at Birmingham Sail Club followed by the Fall 48 at Lake Norman Yacht Club November 1-2.
