Carolinas District

The Carolinas District encompasses fleets in North and South Carolina as well as a fleet in Virginia.

In North Carolina we have Carolina Sailing Club in Durham, Lake Norman in Mooresville, Lake Townsend Yacht Club in Greensboro and Moorehead City Boatin Club in Moorehead City. In South Carolina, we have Lake Murray Sailing Club in Columbia. And in Virginia we have Smith Mountain Lake in Lake Roanoke.

The District Governor is Carol Claypool. The Carolinas are also the home of Scots n' Water editor Kay Summerfield.

Sell Your Old Sails at the 2013 NAC

The Flying Scot Foundation has generously awarded a grant to North Carolina Community Sailing & Rowing (NCCSR) to purchase used sails for our 12 Flying Scots.  NCCSR is located on Lake Norman not far from LNYC host of 2013 NAC.  NCCSR will pay $200 for each retired racing set of main & jib brought to the NAC.  We will have a table set up at LNYC.  Selling your old sails to NCCSR will really help the community sailing racing and learn-to-sail programs and also help you dramatically reduce the cost of attending the event.  We have no limit on the number we will buy and will be writing checks at the event.

Advance notice will be helpful but not necessary.  Contact Larry Vitez or Christy Lux.

What Kind of Trophy?

A young sailor once asked me why we didn’t give monetary prizes instead of trophies, or “little tin cups” as he called them.  I gave him the long version about how sailing is a Corinthian sport where sportsmanship and fair play are an integral part of the game and how exaggerating the value of the prize might challenge that philosophy.  When the reward for winning is are large there is temptation to cut corners for some.  Look at all the professional major sports and you can see proof of this all too frequently.

Lake Norman Hosts 44 Boats for Great 48

Lake Norman Flying Scot Fleet #48 ordered up perfect wind for their annual Great 48 regatta May 5 & 6 and 44 boats participated. This club often has large numbers at their regattas, but this was a great showing even by their standards.
